I think that relay race sounds like fun. The Utah Grand Slam information I found on a link from the wasatchrunningcenter website. The marathons this year are Ogden, Desert News, Park City, and St. George

From Superfly on Fri, Jan 05, 2007 at 12:05:43

Your diet looks good. I'd just find a way to replace that 60oz. of diet Dew with something else. If you can cut pop from your diet you'll see a PR in this year in every race your ran last year.

Bill good job on not drinking any pop.

With running 11 miles you need more in your tank than some burgers and gatorade. Try a apple and a bannana for breakfast, and something balanced for dinner to restore what you've burned on your run. It will help you recover better and be ready for the next run.

When you say you fear your weight is not where it needs to be, what do you mean too heavy? or too light? I think your speed will continue to develop with time. Bill I would just remain consistent with your training, I know you may a bit discouraged because you haven't met some of your goal times lately for some of your races, maybe lower your expecations just a little so you can come close to or achieve your goal, then the races will start feeling like more of a positive experience. Then you can move on and set new goals as you get a better feel for what kind of shape you are in. Ok, there is my Dr. Phil advice for the day. I'm just looking forward to 2007 and I think everyone in the club will improve and can improve from where they were last year.

Ran wih Steve and a new person  who's name escapes me at the moment.    We ran into the desert reserve.   Nice trail run. It has been awhile since i ran up that way.    My ankles had a good work out.  slightly twisted  one.  lots of rocks  etc.   Steve is awesome, and is almost as strong as a Bull.   Steve and I were neck and neck the last mile.  he turned and looked at me and smiled, then went by me like a jet passing a bye plane.

Break. Cereal, Banana.   Lunch.  16 oz chocolate bar . Top roman, vegtables, egg.  64 ounces of water, 64 ounces sope diet one carb.  Dinner:  piece chicken, one piece pizza.    and one  therapist!    Wow...  what a ride!!

I decided that Dustin is right.  I need to re evaluate my goals and work on  obtaining more realistic times with my races etc.   It is a good way to be happy with my running again.

I'm getting hungry reading your post. So you are planning on doing the 10 miler. What is Dave going to do? I have a church thing on Saturday so I'm not going to be able to go. 3 more weeks of basketball and things should slow down and my training should improve.

From Dave Holt on Wed, Jan 24, 2007 at 13:37:32

I don't know about the race - I really don't want to back off for the rest of the week or have to take time to recover. But on the other hand, I feel like I could tear off a pretty good 10 miler right now.

Today i ran the Mesquite  10 mile.   The people that organized it were not to good.  We waited a good  half hour just to pick up our number and chip.      They drove us out into the desert on a bus.  I felt like a troubled youth going out to the desert to spend some hard time.   When we arrived at the starting line.  I took  my  usual warm up jog and sized up the competition.  Oh crap Steve Olsen!    I Did not recognize  any one else that i thought would give me a go for my money.  I did see Toby and his wife who were not running this day.    I started out  fine,  But i missed the first mile marker,  then decided  not to worry about the splits.   first ten k was fine    39.38.   legs a little tired.  Hit a hill at mile 7 and some 20 year old from salt lake cought me.   I draged behind hind him  the rest of the way.     Toby  paced me for about a mile on mile 8 up a hill.  toward the end.   I almost cought the guy ahead of me.   if the hill were just a little longer i would of over taken him.       Ended up    107.45      I will take the time.  The guy that won the race. was from Indiana  he came in at around 53.    I came in 10th over all.   2an in division.    I am not use to getting second.   Booo.     THE SHOES FROM THE  ST. GEORGE RUNNING CENTER   really helped.

I don't know what to think about the Spectrum 10K now. I figured it would fill up, but not that fast. Does Steve have any pull or ties with the race director? I might check around and see if there is anything up north or in Vegas or just not worry about it and keep training.

The story for today: Mr. Yasso 800 and miss Buffet got together today.   It was love at first sight, but after one time around it was obvious that they had some major differences.  After two times around Mr. Yasso 800 got sick to His stomach just thinking of Miss Buffet.     It lasted a total of 3 minutes and 20 seconds and they both understood that they were clearly incompatible.

I ended up doing 8 x 200 at the Dixie track.   2 mile warm up and then 2 mile cool down.       Pretty sore after words.  Left knee was not happy about the work out.

That is nuts that Spectrum is full. I guess it is okay that I can't be there then anyway. But really if the city is going to do this marathon thing and promote these other races, they should do more to make sure more people can get in. I wouldn't like it if the course had to change, but really, something needs to be done to allow the race to grow - even if it means starting in a new place because of transportation.

Ran with Dave, Dustin, Steve.   Feeling real sluggish.  We picked up the pace .  Clyde was lucky he was not there. he would of been  begging us to slow down. :):)    Dave looks ready for Boston.     Steve runs on gas power.  I think he will have to burn his running shorts.  We blazed a new trail out in the desert.  The sun about blinded me.  The glare alone almost stoped me in my tracks.

Met up at the snow canyon track to do some speed work.    Did some funky chicken maneuvers to warm up.     Steve missed all the excitement.   We did ladders.  I got to get my watch a new battery.  Started out 200,400,800,1200, 800, and 800,400,200.   I did not go all out on these. About 5 k pace.  Steve rocked and made everyone look bad. I thought heard him say to someone "get out of the way fat butt"  Felt okay after the work out. Had a little left in the tank.  Toby was there along with his wife.  Good turn out. Around 10 people at the work out.

Ran the Dam to Dam today.    Not to happy with the time.  32 something.   5.2  mile race.       10th overall   1st in division.    ($ 20) buck certificate which I used toward some running shorts.   Race started out at the west end of sandhollow.  the course  is all on dirt ,gravel  and sandy road.   Fairly flat course.    Ran about 6 after the race with Dustin  and Jose.  Race conditions were good. Great weather.  The St. George Running Club dominated the race.   Dave ran 10 miles to get to the race then came in second overall.  (What a Gladiator!)   Dustin($15) came in 4th overall and Steve($10)  came in right behind him  5 th overall.   Clyde would probably of won the race.  The race had certificates and gave out nice bags instead of shirts.  Also there was Steve Olsen ($20. )  not sure what overall place.  I told Dustin before the race that I was going to try and hang with him. He smiled and gave me that look as if he were saying "Dream on Grandpa!"     After mile 1,  Dustin was gone from my sight,  like a wayword youth running from home.

Steve and Clyde ran two mile repeats at a blistering pace.  They were running the mile labs faster then almost every one else just running 400s.     It was a thing of beauty

Bill, I hope you're just using a known joke? The reason I'm asking, is because I got the following in my inbox on Tuesday:

"He forgot his wedding anniversary and his wife was really ticked off at him. She told him, "Tomorrow morning, I expect to find a gift in the driveway that goes from 0 to 200 in under 6 seconds, AND IT BETTER BE THERE." The next morning, Mark got up really early. When his wife woke up a couple of hours later, she looked out the window, and sure enough, there was a small gift-wrapped box sitting in the middle of the driveway.Confused, the wife put on her robe, ran out to the driveway, and took the box into the house. She opened it, and found a brand new bathroom scale. Mark is not yet well enough to have visitors."

(A fellow runner, (friend who owns a running store.)  I could barley muster an 8-minute mile.   Then about 2 miles into my run, Grandma and her electric wheel chair came around the corner.  Grandma smiled as she started to pull past me.  (For more of the Duel under the sun II,  send 3 easy payments of $ 9.99)  A portion of the proceeds will go to Help Behunin Garmin fund.

Kendra told me the direction they went so I Ran the reverse course  to chuckwalla.  Met up with Clyde and Brent?  And Jose up at the top of sunset point. Briefly chatted then Clyde took off like he had fire in his pants.  Jose, Brent and Myself flew down behind him putting out the fire.  Brent is an awesome runner the guy can just fly.   Smooth as vanilla ice cream.  Hose on the other hand is a great runner, but he runs like Rocky Roads Ice cream.    The sides of my Saucony shoes are splitting out at the toes.  I guess my feet are too wide.   Ran another 4 tonight.

Bill I have been running in the Asics DS Trainer and the Asics Nimbus. The DS Trainer is pretty lightweight. I have last year's model, but Steve has this year's model and I tried it on, nice fit and light. I seem to like the DS Trainer more than the Nimbus. The Nimbus is quite a bit heavier and has more cushioning, at first I really thought I wouldn't like the Nimbus at all, but it has been good to wear on the trails and on the days when I'm feeling quite as speedy which I guess would be everyday.

I Decided i needed to do a little speed today.   I warmed up for about two miles. Then I picked up the pace 6:00-6:15 min miles for 3.  then slowed down. probably 6:45 pace the last mile.    Nice and cool morning.  I am enjoying morning running again.  Now if i can just get my children in bed before 12:30!    My legs seem to feel tired around mile 3.  I want to slow down.  how do i convince my mind to push through the body wanting to slow down?  My breathing is okay. 4 more miles at night.  (Glycerin)

Nice awards.   Must of been about 600 people there.     I was feeling pretty good the first 4 miles.    My legs began to tire a little and i almost fell down.     so what else is new!     Happy with the time for now.  need to work on a little more power (speed work to run a litttle more cosistant from mile to mile.

new course this year.  ran down the paved road for about 3/4 of mile then hit the trail.  I was glad i was up front because the crowd behind had a big time bottle neck here.   the course went up the canyon for about 3/4 of a mile.  then we turned around and headed back down the canyon.   mile 5-6 is the mentalpart of this course.   slight up grade.  can lose the race on this mile.    I had one guy out kick me at the end.   I almost passed out!   Happy with the race.   Congratulations to the st. george running club.  We all placed in our divisions. Clyde won the race.  Super job Clyde!

Good job at the race Bill, it was great weather today and a fun race, I think everyone was pretty happy with their times for this early in the year. We just have to keep everyone healthy and improving throughout the summer. I still can't decide about a marathon do to the early part of the summer. Clyde mentioned he might now do one up in Rexburg, ID which I would be real interested in since that is where I went to college for a few years.

I did not get up and run this morning so I knew I had to make it up tonight.   I showed up at the track to do some speed work.   The wind was blowing and there was a light mist in the air and the temperature was around 54 degrees.  No runners were there except some soccor players and fans in the bleachers.   I was about to leave when Chrissie and Steve showed up at my car.   Steve said he wanted to run, but he had to go home and wash his hair!  Chrissie said she does not run with strange guys.  So there I sat.  I decided to go over to the Recreation center and get a few miles on the treadmill.   First three miles 7.30 pace.  Dustin Showed up and we talked a little.   Next 5 miles turned it up a notch as I watched dancing with the stars.  6.30 pace. I did not make it to speed work with Steve.   So I hit the treadmill.  I Ran over to the recreation center.  Warmed up one mile on the treadmill.  My 1st mile I felt a little tight.  5:49, 2. 5:40 3. 5:39 4 5:35.  I ran a slow quarter between miles for recovery.  Ran one-mile recovery. Then  I pushed it  to 6:40 pace and brought up the incline to 5. for ¼ mile intervals.   Around mile 8 the treadmill gave up the ghost.  (The thing Just died on me. )  So a picked a new victim and ran two more miles.   (Asics speed stars) I am thinking if i can hold this kind of pace on repeats. there should be no reason that i could not run at least 37-36 min ten k.  I think I may just have a mental problem?

Ran the southwest credit union 10k. I started out a little fast. I surged to the front of the pack and stayed there for about a mile. Then Steve Hooper and Steve Olsen paced me the rest of the way. Felt pretty good the whole way. I feel i could of picked up the pace a little more around mile 4. At the end I gave a rebel yell at the boys to move it. they sprinted to the end. Steve Hooper got 1st place. I ended up getting 4th over all. I feel good about this because i did not taper for the race.

It looks like you already got your long run in for the week. I'm actually going to stay up in Salt Lake Friday night and run the striders 30K race Saturday, so I won't be around to do a longer run after the border 10K.

From Dave Holt on Tue, May 01, 2007 at 13:41:48

PLANTAR FASCIITIS! (sp?) Fun for you. I got it last summer and am still fighting the war. I have taken a good turn for the better in the past few months, however. Nonetheless, it is still hanging on.

Go to Steve and get a Strausburg Sock. It is kind of weird at first, but you get used to it eventually. It really helped take my pain away; and now I just wear it two, three times per week just to keep the PF strong.

From April on Tue, May 01, 2007 at 13:43:04

very smart bill. if it's tendinitis you should rest it until you can do a calf raise without pain. i'd ice that thing several times a day. sorry to hear about that, but you'll be back at it soon- just take care of yourself.

From Cheston on Tue, May 01, 2007 at 23:05:54

Bill, sorry to hear about the heal. Your right by taking a few days off. Better rest a few days then having to take two months off because of an agitated injury that could have been healed with a little tender love and care.

Rest up, try hitting the pool.

I don't know what it was just feeling a little dizzy and a headache, I did get a pretty good nights rest so I should be ready to go for the rest of the week. I got signed up for St. George yesterday

From April on Wed, May 02, 2007 at 21:43:17

no i'm not running this weekend. i was going to, but changed my mind. i just don't feel very competitive yet because i'm not fast, so i'm not running every possible race because it starts to add up just to run for fun. i am still racing quite a bit though- i'm doing the cotton days 10k next weekend.

bill do you have a golf ball? you should set it on the floor & slowly roll it with good pressure over the bottom of your foot, especially where it hurts most. i'm beginning to develop a theory about plantar fascitis (as a massage therapist.) i was studying my anatomy books, namely the foot & the muscles of the sole. i have a strong hunch that plantar's is due to knots in the bottom of the foot, not inflammation of the fascia, because a.) the whole body has a fascious covering- there's fascia over all the muscles, it's just thicker in some places (i.e. the sole of the foot & the IT band) so if it really is the fascia inflamed, then why isn't there more "itis" conditions in the muscle groups? there's not! there's just knots, which is what i think is going on in cases of "plantars" and b.) the reason for "itis" conditions is because some area of the body is being pulled too forcefully. in the case of plantars, the knots of the foot are causing the muscles to shorten, thus pulling on the tendons/fascia.

try the golf ball idea. hold pressure on your most tender areas. are you running with the club tomorrow?

From April on Wed, May 02, 2007 at 22:07:55

bill, i figured it out. i actually work with a guy who is amazing at understanding & fixing aches & pains. if this thing keeps bothering you, you can come see me for $50 your first visit- expensive, i know & apologize, but i'm telling you it works. i just learned how to cure plantars.

Hey Bill

I'm planning on running tonight. Are we still planning on 6:15 at the store? Also are you still planning on driving your own car up tomorrow. If so I thought we could meet somewhere in Salt Lake, then Sunny could take my car and we could go on up to Ogden and get our bibs and maybe carbo load up there at the expo or somewhere. I'm getting pretty excited for the race. I have kind of been taking it easy lately, but I feel ready for a good race, especially after running good at Hurricane into the headwind. After this race and weekend I'm going to be ready to crank things up this summer and put in a good summer of training. I have to break 2:40 this fall at St. George!

I ran the Ogden Half Marathon.   Went up with Dustin and his family Friday afternoon.  We arrived in Ogden around 7:30 and got are numbers.  I had the privilege of meeting some of the guys on the blog.   Steve Ashbaker, Paul Petersen, Andy and a few others. All of them are amazing runners.   I knew coming into this race that it would pretty much be just a training run due to my planters.  The course is down hill and the road slants to the right.  Since my injury is on my right foot this caused some additional problems?  I tried to run in the middle of the road when possible.    I managed to finish. I loved the course.  Maybe next year I will come back and run the marathon if I do not run Boston.

$100.00 for gas, $80.00 for entry fee.  $30 for food.   10 hours of driving time.   Getting my picture taken with Dustin Ence, Paul Petersen. Steve Ashbaker, Priceless!!!

From Sasha Pachev on Thu, May 24, 2007 at 15:24:39

Bill - from this picture it looks like you have extra 15 lb or so in the upper body, and it looks like it will go with proper diet. For a master, diet has much more serious effect than for a college runner because the natural metabolism starts going down. Also, I have a hunch that tempo runs tend to improve metabolism. Try adding 3 miles of tempo at about 6:20 pace a couple of times a week, that should go well with the dietary improvements.

For the diet, I would recommend focusing on quality and not worry about quantity. Lots of fruit and vegetables to clean out the bowels. Lots of grains. Very little meat, restrict it to poultry or fish, and no more than once a week. Absolutely no junk.

I have the 205 which is the same as 305 without heart rate monitor. I have been thinking about upgrading to the 305. There are quite a few on the blog that have the 305. I think everyone loves them. In fact Superfly (Clyde) is on his third one as he accidently smashed one and had another stolen. Not sure how many will say it has made them a better runner but it sure is nice to have the data it provides. If you do get one get the 305. The 301 is much larger and not as accurate as it is an older model.

I have the 305 model, the one with the heart rate monitor. It's an awesome tool, although I rarely use the HRM (but it's nice to know it's there). I think it helped me become better runner, because it gives accurate information about the paces I'm running, so I'm able to train at correct intensity and get more out of my training. I'm able to run fatlek-type workout anywhere on the road and know my distance/pace, so I'm not tied to the track. HRM is very helpful when you're trying to recover - you can monitor your HR and make sure you don't go too fast. At least that's the primary use for me. Sometimes it loses signal, but overall it's been a great help. I definitely recommend 305.

Bill - what is the cause of the downtime?

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, May 25, 2007 at 14:13:24

Bill - some thoughts on the plantar. This week I see nothing for Monday and Tuesday, then 10 miles on Wednesday. It is only natural that you would have downtime on Thursday again. Remember the frog principle - the frog jumps out if the heat is raised suddenly, but boils to death on gradual temperature increase. By the same token, plantar flares up if the mileage is increased suddenly, but a gradual approach will boil it out of existence.

To control the injury the mileage you do the next day should be a function of the mileage you did the day before. If you ran zero the day before (other than scheduled Sunday rest), and especially if that zero was injury forced, the next day should be 2-3 miles, then 5-6 miles next day, etc.

Also - I wrote about this yesterday, but with the plantar this becomes particularly important - find a way to drop some dead weight.

From Dave Holt on Fri, May 25, 2007 at 14:24:57

I really agree with Sasha. I am coming up on the one-year anniversary of my PF and we have become good companions. If I treat her right, she treats me right. I give her good shoes, a few days a week in the Sock, and ice. She gives me a little reminder that she is there every week or so and life goes on.

Take it easy - but do it in the right way. Moderate mileage at easier paces, as well as getting up and moving before your run to help stretch the Fascia back out. Get Better.

From Brent on Fri, May 25, 2007 at 19:00:46

Medical boot sleeping at night really helped me. A little uncomfortable, but really seemed to help. Also, check your non-running shoes, my problem has stayed away once a bought NB dress shoes. Most non-running shoes are not worth a heck.

I do not have a set speed workout that I do. I have been doing fartleks on my runs which seems to be helping. Also, I will push the pace a bit on some of my runs. Short bursts seem to help.

Hey Bill, how's the foot feeling. I think you are doing pretty good cross training and just listening to your body. It is hard I know you want to train and put in lots of miles, but you also have to be smart and not cause any major damage.

Hey Bill, I ended up having to buy two of the Strausburg Socks yesterday because my Plantar Fascia has been acting up for about 3 days (obviously it's not as bad as what you have going on}. So last night I wore them both for about 4 hours before ripping them off in the middle of the night. I did feel better this morning. It has just made me nervous because I want to make sure It doesn't start getting an worse. I really hope we can get you back up and running like you want.

From Superfly on Wed, Jun 06, 2007 at 12:15:30

There is a lot of time left to come back even stronger than before you got hurt. Don't rush it and be smart when you do run. No random 20 milers or anything under 6:20 pace. I'd be doing as much other things as possible. Lots of sit-ups, push-ups, spinning, and whatever else you can do to keep things in shape until you can run hard again.

Hey Bill sorry I didn't make it over this morning. I have been struggling a little the last few days running, which as you said, that might be a good sign for a good race on Friday and Saturday. I'll try to get a few good miles tonight, then some tomorrow morning, before I head up to Salt Lake. I'll probably run a few Friday morning, then the race. I'm the second runner, so it will still be warm when I start. We are starting at 5:00pm and my legs are 6.7 hard, 3.0 easy, and 5.3 hard. I'm getting pretty excited and it should be lots of fun.

Bill, Way to go this week! It's nice to see your foot feeling a little better. That run today was killer. I think with this heat I'm going to start carrying some type of Hydration on all long runs. It's just not worth messing with anymore.

Yea, I took some water with me. You should see my "wife-beater" tan. It looks like I'm wearing a white tank top when I take off my shirt.

The sock seems to be working alright. It kind of hurts the foot after about 3 hours of wearing it. I'm probably wearing it too tight. Although my achilles didn't hurt at all on todays run, I didn't even have to warm it up. Something must be working.

What a nice morning to Run.  It took me 3 miles to warm up. But after that I got going.  I saw the girls Mikle, Kendra,  twice.  I thought about runing with them but i said to my self that my tempo work out was for tonight and i better just cool my jets until then.

I will run 6 tonight on the treadmill.  I have decided if I am going to do two a days I will make one on the treadmill in the late afternoon.   It is to hot during the day to run. (100+)  And if  I wait until 9 pm   to run out side.  It is not enough recovery time when I run again at 6 am the next morning.

I decided to do my speed work today.  warmed up 2 miles on treadmill.   ran 4x 1 mile repeats

1. 5:42  2. 5:39  3.5:32  4. 5:38

Felt pretty good at the end. thought i could of done one more.  warmed down.

If this work out was on the track  i think i would add at least 10 seconds  to each mile because of the corners on the track.

Bill - was that Portuguese? Sounded like broken Spanish to me, I understood about half. I've heard that Estonian sounds like a drunk Finn speaking to a Finn.

It is good that you are posting your menu. I suppose you want some feedback. You need to change some things. Volume is OK, but do not stuff yourself to the point where you could not run 8:00 pace immediately after eating your meal. The fat and unnaturally sweetened foods need to go.

From Maria on Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 17:21:15

Hmm, I've been using chocolate fudge shake as recovery drink immediately following long runs. It has almost exactly same ratio of carbs to protein as Endurox R4 (Endurox is 4:1, shake is 3.5:1), but it's much cheaper and tastes so much better. I'm buying a certain brand of shake here after checking the label. It's made with skim (or semi-skim) milk, I think, so it's low fat.

Only 4 miles this morning.  I was lucky to get that in.  I just had a to fight off the Bed Monster to get out the door.

I met up with Curly,  “D” and Steve    at the acceleration fitness center.   I enjoyed an hour-long presentation on nutrition for marathon training.   Very good information.     After words we headed out for a tempo run.  I managed to stay with them for the first 4 miles.   After that I started losing ground.   I felt pretty dehydrated and I was upset to my stomach.     I still felt good about the run.  And I always enjoy running with the guys.

I know all about that Bed Monster. It's his fault that I end up running in the heat most days.

You posted some pretty good speed the other day on the treadmill as well. With the times you posted, I'm sure it's off. It's probably time to get the treadmill calibrated.

Hey thanks for the advice, 25 miles though, that sounds crazy!!! (painfull) But nice to see we all have those sluggish days!

From Cheston on Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 21:22:32

I don't know how you manage to run twice a day? Does you body really recover fast enough to run twice in a day?

You know, if you keep doing all this crazy running, you wont be able to walk by the time your 50 years old. I hear that a lot, I hope it's not true.

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 21:30:15

Dennis Simonaitis runs 2-3 times a day. He is 44 years old, and he's been running competitively since high school. His relaxing mileage is about 60, his hard training mileage is around 95. I've never heard him talk about being injured. Unless he gets hit by a car, I expect him to be running well past 50.

Bill,

That stinks. I've hit that wall a few times, once at Boston and once at the Valley of Fire. I wonder if it has anything to do with all the miles you've been putting in? It seems like you ramp up really fast, maybe too fast for you body to adjust without getting injured or really tired? I don't know, you know your body better then anyone, just an observation.

Anyway, take it easy and let me know what you find out.

From Superfly on Sat, Jul 07, 2007 at 22:58:37

Bill sorry about today. I hope you were ok. When we got to River Road I looked back and saw that you were not there anymore. So we just kept heading up the trail. Then we finished and I ran up to shut the gate and then came home to use the restroom and I think that is when you came. Sorry I missed you. Hope your feeling better. It's just the heat and hydration I'd guess.

The thing with my foot is I think plantar fasciitis, my left arch hurts lots, so I'm strassburg sock-ing it, but I'm not sure how well that's working... anyway, I can still run fine on it, so I'm ok.

Besides that, Kendra and Jeannie usually meet at my house Monday mornings at 6 for 6.5 miles. I would say we average 10:30-11 pace on our runs. The more the merrier!

I got to Bryce around 5 pm Friday night. I was going to stay at the KOA but I decided against it because there were enough teenagers their to drive a person crazy. I decided to camp just out side of town on top of a mountain. I barley managing to get the tent set up when a heavens opened and brought down buckets of water. The wind started blowing and the thunder was echoing of the mountain walls. I did not have time to secure my tent so I lay in side of my tent like a dead weight trying to keep me and the tent from soaring of the top of the mountain. The race started just north of the famous ruby’s Inn. 800 eager beavers ready to scream down the canyon to Canyonville. The gun went off and we started out of the gate. Then the gun went off again. Like a false start in a track meet. I stopped for a moment as about 50 people passed me, then I had to get it in gear. The first two-mile are flat. Then the next 5 go right down the canyon. I pretty much stayed with 4 guys going down the canyon. Then I slowly pulled away from them on the bottom. Here are my splits. 1. 6.49 2. 6.21 3. 5.57 4. 6.10 5. 6.24 6. 6.24 7. 6.46 8. 7.10 9. 6.56 10. 6.53 11. 6.51 12. 7.05 13. 6.26 126.26 Avg pace 6:39

From Maria on Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 10:30:35

Bill, you should win a prize for the most entertaining blog entries ever!!!

Be careful with baby Garmin though - sometimes he can be quite erratic, like all babies, I guess. I do not believe you can even physically do 15 min. miles, even if you're walking. Sometimes, Garmin cuts out intermittently, and then it displays less distance and, naturally, slower pace. I caught mine on a measured course more than once, and I knew I weren't doing 11-12 min. miles. When I got home and divided total time by the measured distance, I got more like 8:45-9:00 miles - which is my usual easy pace. Couple of times I even watched the distance on my Garmin decrease as I ran on - imagine that!!

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 18:24:36

My Garmin, both the GPS part and the HRM part stopped working completely around mile 16 of the DesNews marathon yesterday. Fortunately, the watch was still going.

I love your posts. I have a Garmin. I find it very inaccurate especially on courses with tight curves (around a lake) and courses with lots of trees (everywhere near my house). I recently got the $30 Nike+. It has a shoe pod a bit bigger than a nickel. I think it weighs less. It can go in the sole of Nike shoes or on the shoelaces of other shoes in a little pouch. You plug the very small transmitter into the Ipod Nano. You get real time, very accurate data on the screen of the Ipod and in your ear with a sweet female voice if you so choose. Previously, I didn't run with an Ipod but I do now. I only wear one ear phone so I can hear what is going on around me. I then download the data to Nike+.com and keep track of everything there. Sure beats the frustration of a $$$Garmin.

From "D" Ence on Fri, Aug 03, 2007 at 11:42:43

Hey Bill, glad to here the car missed you, it is dangerous running on the roads, especially when there is a group. I used to deal with car/runner problems everyday when I was coaching high school kids that just take off and go all over the place. I'm planning on running with the club tomorrow. Is the plan still doing a 20 miler from Anderson Junction?

From Ruthio on Fri, Aug 03, 2007 at 12:50:39

Thanks! I'll need all the $ I can get for that, esp. if I end up going to school out of state! Glad you didn't die - I couldn't find you at all on my way back and was fearing for your life!

First XC meet is in less than a week! Aug. 9, 6pm at Canyon View!

From Dave Holt on Sat, Aug 04, 2007 at 20:13:01

Bill that is true to a point. But as I always teach my runners, you ARE responsible for your own self. Just because one of the sheep crosses, doesn't mean every one should follow without looking. That is a recipe for roadkill!

Bill, no nude beaches for us. I heard there are some in St. Tropez, but we didn't go there. However, at all beaches in French Riviera (and much of Europe) it is perfectly legal for women to sunbathe topless. The ladies are exercising their right, to be sure!

As for the paces for your 400-800 repeats, you can check Daniels' "Running Formula" or McMillan calculator (www.mcmillanrunning.com) - both give reasonable training pace ranges based on your recent race results.

Did you run with the same effort outside as on the Dreadmill? Typically, running outside is harder than indoors, due to air resistance, wind and variable terrain. Not to mention the heat! If it was over 80F outside when you ran, I wouldn't be surprised at a slower pace. With easy runs, who cares anyway? Time on your feet is more important, so good job on putting in 10 for the day!

From Mik'L on Thu, Aug 09, 2007 at 12:01:48

Bill- I hear you didn't get in to Hobblecreek but you want in? My sister is in but she probably can't run it. If you want to call up there and see if they will let you switch with her then I will check with her to make sure that is okay. Let me know.

Well tonight I got my first massage ever. Steve has been raving about this person for over a year now and I decided to give it a try. After all Steve in the gooroo on massage and he states that it made him the man he is today. (Bald middle age man with a slight speech impediment!) The massage guy brings it to your door. You call and he will travel! He shows up! 6 ft guy with bicep’s bigger then my waist! (I am a dead man) He tells me to lie down on the table and relax. (Let the pain begin) I immediately go back to the war days and tell him only my name rank and serial number! This is going to be the most painful hour I have had in long time. It feels like he is scrapping down my legs with a roller. Scrapping away the muscles off the bones. After the legs he goes for the back and neck. I feel like a helpless child being controlled by a stranger! It felt like a truck running over me that stops right on top. I gasp for air! And wonder if I will ever run another marathon! The man smiles as I hold back the tears and cringe at every pressure point. He told me I was a mess! I am now! Holy cow! Bring in the wheel chair! And the oxygen machine and the painkillers.

From Maria on Thu, Oct 04, 2007 at 16:32:08

Ouch Bill! That sounds like one painful massage! But all the pain probably means you had a lot of tightness in your legs. Hopefully the calf starts feeling better now.

26.200.000.000.000.000.000.0026.20

Here is my race report for the St. George   Marathon.    It was a mild cold day at the start of the race.  People were running all over the place trying to stay warm.  Music was blasting and I was stoked just to be a part of it.   I stayed with Dustin at his cabin in Pine valley the night before the great Race.   I picked up Steve from the Expo and drove up around 10 pm.      As usual we were pretty much up and down all night.  We got up at 6 am and drove over to the marathon!    The gun sounded and off we went.  Mile one I was having a sharp pain coming from my lower back.   I tried to stretch it out. I was maintaining a 6:40 pace as planned.  I stopped at the first aid station and had a guy give me a bear hug to see if he could pop it.   I stopped at several aid stations and had them try to pop my back but each time with no success.  I tried sports cream.  My left leg was going numb.  My form and stride was completely out of wack.   I managaged to hold a 6:50 pace the first half but after that my pace and time quickly deterated.  My calf’s felt like exploding and I knew at this point my goal of under 3 hours was dashed.    I observed the ambulance go bye several times and thought about having a DNF on my record.  I decided that I was going to finish. I was not going to let this win.   I run many races each year and i realize   I  will have a bad race once in awhile.  This was one of those.  Finished around 3:30.  Just behind grandpa and walker brigade!

Thinking back J this may be the cause of my problem at this marathon.

  1. I hurt my calf two weeks before Marathon.   Tapered more then I should have. To recover from injury.  Body did not respond well to running again?
  2. I had a full body massage (Deep Tissue) Weds first massage I have ever had.
  3. It was colder then normal. I was not use to the cold!
  4. Back was simply out and it made the difference.

I would like to say I loved this experience. But it was the most painful Marathon I have ever Ran thus far. #4.     I am looking forward to another race at another date.

Bill sorry to hear about all the bad issues you were having. I hope you can get in a race soon and just go out and kick some butt.

Your back could have been sore from sleeping in a different bed the night before. You may just want to stay at home in the future.

I hope your recovery is fast. I guess you may not be as jacked up as normal.

Keep at it and you'll get that sub 3 hour marathon. Just need to work on a few things. Good job on finishing!

Sorry to hear you had a bad race. I had back issues once at the Disney Marathon. With back spasms and pain radiating down my left leg, it wasn't the Happiest Place on Earth. I did enjoy the marathon but it was my PW until this weekend. Read about my Chicago fiasco, and it might make you feel better. I really hope you get that back issue sorted out. Are you sure that "calf injury" isn't all coming from your back?

I went to the chiropractor who put me on a table and did some funky things with the table.   He then proceeded to put some electrodes on my back and slowly turned up the power until I cried uncle.    He left the room as my back muscles were twitching every which way.  (Is that smoke I smell?)  Is the man coming back?    He told me  my back was a bit messed up and that I cannot run for the rest of the week.    Boo> I am use to the guys on the club telling me I cannot run,  but the chiropractor!     Instead of running I went and finally watched Harry Potter.  The movie is a bit over my head so I will need someone to explain it to me some day!

Bull - what's up. As your personal physician, here is what I prescribe for your winter running. Miles, Miles, and more Miles. Don't worry about any speed (when you get the urge, go to a park and run barefoot striders). But a large dosing of mileage this winter will do you wonders; and bring back the Bull in you!

From Logan on Wed, Oct 24, 2007 at 13:47:39

Bull - I agree with Dave. Bumping up your miles will do you good instead of the speed work right now. You can do the speed work later after you don't feel so tired on your regular runs. Stay positive and upbeat though.

From Maria on Wed, Oct 24, 2007 at 14:28:41

Bill, when I read your entry (after several previous ones), I thought, "why in the world is he doing speedwork after not feeling good, injuries, after the marathon", etc. Then I saw Dave's and Logan's comments. So I'm not the only one :). Just run comfortably now, whatever the pace is, and enjoy your runs. If your body is healed, you'll start feeling better soon, if not, all the more reasons to run easy until you recover fully. Strides are a great way to keep your leg turnover up, and that's all the speedwork you need now. Good luck!!

Bill, welcome back! I missed your entries... you sure do have a way with images - "my jaw was slapping"! I just tried to imagine that, and started cracking up. Good luck in your winter training, it must be tough in cold and snow. I became such a wimp in London, I'm cold when it's low 40s!! You guys in Utah put me to shame.

Bill, great time at Tucson you did good, you must be feeling somewhat better with your injuries, how was the course compared to St George I have always wanted to run it, take care and let those guns rest for now.

I ran the Tuscan marathon!  Going into this thing i new I was out of shape  and over weight so I really did not have any asperations about doing Well.     We started off on a down grade then  it went hilly.  then fairly flat.  around Mile 8  we ran up to the bioshere. ( more hills.)  I was on pace to break my first 3 hour marathon until i hit mile 19  then i hit the wall.   I could not run.  i had to walk and jog the rest of the way to the finish.   managed to run 3:17.

From Dustin on Mon, Dec 03, 2007 at 13:06:01

Good job Bill. You ran faster than St. George so you should feel good about that and like you said you're still not in top shape. What happened with Steve? I didn't see his name in the results.

The pace you can hold for 19 should be sustainable in the marathon with a little bit more training. Once you recover, work up to 8 miles a day 6 days a week. Do not do long runs until you can do 8x6 without injuries or signs of trouble. Run easy on all runs.

From Superfly on Mon, Dec 03, 2007 at 14:49:37

Good job Bill. Take it easy and stay healthy and injury free going into the new year. As your base gets stronger you'll be looking for a good year in 2008- Free from injury.

It is time to start thinking about making some new goals for 2008.   However, I must look at the past to see what I can improve on for the future!

I ran 17 races in 2007.    It all began with The Painters Half in January.  In total I ran 2 Marathons, 5 Half marathons, 8 x 10 k and 1 x 5 k.       It has been a blast running with the club.  Steve, Dave, Clyde, Dustin who have been the most consistent in coming out and running club runs.  The club is growing and it is fun to meet the new runners.

A big fat (0).    My Roaming back pain, which seems to just follow me wherever I go, continues.   I can't seem to out run it.  I look like I need a walker when I walk during the day!    So    I decided to go to my work Christmas party and play lead singer karaoke style.   This created a mass exit.  Any one that knows me thinks that I sound like a harpooned whale.   I feel the quilted weight of not running.  But I drowned my sorrows in 4 returns to the snack bar.

Oh no, the Wildbull is on his backside! Try to find some sports doctor (ortho, osteo, chiro, etc.), but someone who deals with runners. Otherwise, they are going to keep telling you to take time off (I'm not saying you shouldn't, but it's better to deal with a sports specialist). You may have sciatica if the pain is shooting down the leg. I hope you figure it out soon! Don't feel bad and have a wonderful Christmas!

What a day.  IT all started at the villiage inn for breakfast.. I had the country breakfast with hot choclate.    After that a visit to the bone cracker!  and a  small  treatment session with electrodes!    after that lunch at applebees!   3 ontrey deal. shrimp, chicken wings, steak, and three beverages to wash it all down.   We got lunch for free because we had to wait 45 minutes.    Nothing like free lunch!    Then at 5  I ran with the club.   Dave, "D" Logan F, Allen M,  Mike, Paul.     We were all decked out in multible layers with beanie hats and gloves looking like that kid on the Christmas story.   Logan who came down from Logan was in a singlet and shorts and was wondering what are problem was?  We  Saint George guys are wimps.    One of Santas elfs must of fell off the sleigh!   He showed up in tights and red santa hat.  Glad we got the run done. And no one ran over the elf.  Later that night the rain was coming down side ways.

Confession of a slide player!    I am a member of a Christmas Band  4 kazoos, One triangle, 1 duck, 1 train, And a wood block.   We have performed for state agencies all over Saint George.  We were going to perform  for this terminally ill guy at the hospital but they kicked us out before the performance.   The room had a quarantined sign out side of the door.  We were so excited to play no one thought to read it.  The slide is a delicate instrument which requires precise air out take and eye to hand coordination.  Back to running!  I ran from the DMV in Hurricane to Saint George.   I was pretty sore and just ran real slow.   IT Band was tight.
