Bill - try these tests some time: How fast can you sprint 100 meters? 200 meters? 400 meters? Race a mile? How many steps can you cover 100 meters in jumping from one leg to the other trying to take as few steps as possible? How fast do your legs turn over (steps per minute) in an all out sprint? at 6:00 pace? at 7:00 pace?

Ran with Clyde, Dustin, Steve, Got there a little late, and I Did not have time to stretch enough. About 4 miles into running I had to stop because my lower back was hurting. I stretched out and it felt better the rest of the run. Clyde and Steve continued on down the trail at a blistering pace. I decided there was no way to catch them so I took the trail above them and intercepted them coming back. We went over foremaster ridge and ran fairly fast the last two miles. Clyde runs like a dear. He must be getting free Blood transfusions or something. He seems stronger every time we run. And is always pushing the pace. Steve is looking stronger every time also. Steve has an extra gear that comes out of nowhere. Dustin is amazing. He runs his best on flat paved roads. I think these guys will help me become a better runner if they don’t kill me first.

Bill, You're on the move this week! Already over 20 miles. Way to go!

From superfly on Wed, Mar 08, 2006 at 11:17:37

You guys have the early morning advantage over me. There's no way I can get that early and do even 3 miles. I like to sleep way too much.

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Mar 08, 2006 at 11:54:32

Bill - not a good idea to push the mileage with the back pain. I would recommend cross-training (bike is the best, I think) instead of the extra mileage until it goes away.

Clyde - try getting up and running 1 mile before you go to work. Then maybe 1 mile during lunch break. This "always on the run" method works very well for me. The idea is that sitting for a long period of time is detrimental to your health and will hurt your fitness even if you are running 10 miles a day already in one workout.

I believe 120 miles a week works for some people not so much because you need those miles to develop aerobic fitness, but because such mileage makes it impossible for one to sit or be otherwise physically inactive for a long time.

From Bill on Wed, Mar 08, 2006 at 12:16:46

Thanks Shasha for your advice. I will try those tests you suggested. I do go to the gym 3x a week and do circuit weight training. What machines Lifts are best for running?

From Steve Hooper on Wed, Mar 08, 2006 at 17:37:10

Bill, I found this article that answers some questions about weight training for distance runners:

http://www.people.virginia.edu/~ejk4e/runlift1.txt

Back when I was more competitive I would weight train 3 times a week for only 30 min. each. I would do a circuit of biceps, triceps, stomach, pull-ups, bench-press, quads, leg-press, thigh, calf muscles, sholders and lats. I would usaally do the circuit 3 times with no rest between.

I was always tired at the end.

Not even the pounding beat of ac/dc from my mp3 player could motivate me to push it up to threshold speed. I even stopped to pick up 25 cents. Thinking as I stopped “who says running does not pay.” I think my allergies are beginning to act up. It feels like a cold. But I don’t have all the cold symptoms.

Bill:

Regarding cross-training. Weights to strengthen the muscle you feel are weak might be a good idea, however the bulk of it should be aerobic. My first choice would be biking on a hilly course for an hour. Other options are possible - cross-country skiing is a good idea. Some people do the eliptical trainer, for example. The most important thing is that it makes your heart pump as if you were running for an hour or so without aggravating the injury.

The Wildbull invaded Utah county Friday around 3 am after fighting off the perfect storm all night. The freeway was slicker then Steve’s oiled head. I managed to run up to Bridal Veil Falls. Beautiful trail all the way up the canyon. I was looking for Sasha. And he was nowhere to be seen. Maybe, Somehow, he heard that the WildBull was coming to town and decided to take a couple of days off! It was nice to run in Happy valley again.

I wish you could have been there Sat. too. We had a great run. The guy that came out with Clyde and I on Sat. is that guy that beat us at the end of the RUN 4 KIDS race last year - Alan Martin. He said that you had invited him out a couple times to come run with us. I think he's planning on coming Tues. He's a pretty talented runner and pushed-it pretty hard at the end on Sat.

I ran at four in the afternoon today. Felt pretty good. As I was running; I saw this bald headed runner about two hundred yards in front of me. I thought to my self; This must be the "Desert runner." To my surprise it was not the man. It was a cheap imitation from New York. It was a nice day and the heat was on, so I took my shirt off by the river. The Moon must have been full tonight, because the howling from the passing by cars was more frequent then normal. The thought of the day is: Hills are easy as long as you’re going down them!

Ran with the club. They beat me like a card on a bicycle wheel! I should of known something was up when I noticed Steve was doing a warm up around the park before we even got started. Clyde the glide gave me that Clint Eastwood smirk as if he were saying, “do you feel lucky punk. Well do you!!” We started up the hills about 4 miles worth. Every thing was going fine, until the last mile. Clyde took off like a rocket, and Steve took off like lighting. Steve unleashed the beast with in and lost us all. I hung back just to make sure no cops were trying to catch them for speeding. We ended up running a little over 7 miles. I decided I needed to do a few more miles, so I went out that night and ran 3.5 more.

Your comment -"They beat me like a card on a bicycle wheel!" is classic. I think you forgot I was sucking in your dust going up the dirt hill to the electric station.

It sure looks like your getting in some good miles. How do you feel now compared to the way you felt before the St. George marathon? It seems like your faster. I was running times on Sasha's Race Time Predictor and it basicly shows that if you ran a 3:00 St. George Marathon you'll end up at 3:04 at Boston. However, I was thinking if you were to run St. George again in 4 1/2 weeks you probably would run under 3 hours. What are your thoughts?

Got up 6:30 AM and ran 3 miles. I put my Garmin on and kept looking at how far I was running. Every tenth of a mile I would look down at the watch and move on with utter disgust, I kept telling my self, “I can not turn around and head for home until I went out 1.5 miles.” As I passed East Ridge drive, I gazed up its mighty mass. It beckoned me; so I took the challenge and galloped up its sturdy side, wheezing all the way. At the top bent over gleaming in triumph and looking at the view. I said to my self; I did not need to have half million-dollar home to see the view. Just a pair of good legs and a will to get there. ran another 4 miles at night real easy. Easy as pie!

Indeed, a pair of good legs and the will to use them gets you a long way and saves you a lot of money in many ways. If you are not injured, you need to put in some more miles, though. If you are injured or tender, cross-train, but make sure you are out there doing something aerobic for at least 1 hour a day.

I am still battling this dog called a cold. So I decided it would be best to stay out of the cold and rain today. It was a tough call. Today is our regular club run and these guys in the club keep me honest. Sure I could find some blond babe to run with that would be better company, but I run to race, and so do these guys. I ran 9.5 miles on the treadmill at the gym. Boring as a turtle on a hot summer day. To keep my interest, I kept myself up to race pace 6:13 min miles for the first 6 miles. Then slowed it down on incline to 7:00 min miles the last two. Then cranked it up a notch 5:00 min mile pace the last mile. With my sweat flying off my body like a rabid dog, People around me begin to notice and anxiously anticipate me flying off the back of the treadmill and eating wall. Someday they may get that show, but today is not that day.

Bill, looks like you had a pretty good workout on the treadmill. I know when I run at home on the treadmill, my three year old sits there in amazement just waiting for the moment I will come flying off the back of the treadmill and crash into him, thus interrupting his intense game on the gamecube. The run with the club was good and we are planning a 20 miler on Saturday and we are going to meet at Clyde's house at 7:00 am.

The Bull went up to Salt lake after the 20 mile run with the club. Stopped by some place called the china bowl in Orem and had shrimp. The Bull has been running ever since. Food poisoning. The only running I have gotten in is between my bed and the bathroom. I guess you could call that "Threshold speed."

I ran up the T-bone trail. The wind was gusting and the lighting flashing and the very pillars of heaven seemed to be shaken. As I was Running down the road, I saw this muscle man running toward me. I said to my self "the Hulk is a fictional character, ain't no way!" I knew there was no way to out run it so I steadied my pace and said a prayer! Each passing stride as our gap narrowed, a familiar smile greeted me. To my relief it was Clyde the glide. We exchanged a few words and parted ways until next time. I am still sick. Had to stop several times to take care of business.

This time change is killing me. I go to bed at 10 pm and I wake up at 7:15. Wondering what the heck happened. I kiss the wife, and pat the children on the head and scramble to work disgusted at my self for not getting up earlier to go running. I went to the gym and ran 3 on the treadmill. .5 mile warm up at 7 min pace. Then picked it up 6:30 min pace half mile. Then ran 6:00 pace another mile. Next .5 picked it up 5.45 pace. Last ¼ mile ran 5:00 pace. After the sun went down I ran another 6 miles listening to my country favorites. I decided to crank it up the last 2 miles to the sounds of AC/DC. Had some slight hip discomfort nothing serious. Legs are sore. But I think this is just normal training pain.

Boston is the place where legends are made. Three words every runner lives to say: “I finished Boston” My morning started out taking the subway to the common area to catch the bus to Hopkinton 26.2 miles away. I sat with a veteran marathoner who had run many marathons including Boston many times. He was a very knowledgeable fellow who seemed amused with my child like questions about our 26.2 miles journey we were about to embark on. As we arrived into Hopkinton a small woodsy town with tree’s lined up on both sides of the road. The sheer mass of 20,000 runners packed on the green field was astounding. They separated us into two waves. I met up with Dustin and Clyde and Logan fielding another st.george runner. Lines packed 100-200 deep on the porta potties. Seemed like the time went by real fast. 11:30 came and we walked at a steady pace to our starting positions. I wanted to stay with my group most of the 26.2 miles. The crowds massed on both sides of the street cheering us along every step of the way. They say over half million people lined the streets this day to cheer us down the road. Children lined up to get a simple high five from the runners. Sometime 7 to 10 deep. The people make you feel like a rock star. Runners who tagged their name on there arms would have their names chanted almost every passing step. I put my sons names on my arms. People on the left were yelling way to go Cody, and on the right way to go Jacob as I passed. The weather was perfect? Partly cloudy. The wind was blowing but it did not appear to affect the runners. In front of me was a mass of runners. Like a stampede of wild animals with no end or beginning in sight. I kept a 3-hour pace up to about the 15th mile. Then things started acting differently, my legs felt weak and the world around me started spinning. I had to slow down. But I managed to hold on to the finish. Boston is the ultimate marathon experience. Some day I will go back and run a better race. For now. I will cherish the memories and experience gained long after my running legs have give out.

Good job hanging on in the "premature cooldown"!

Looking at your training since you started the blog, here are some possible reasons for the crash at 15:

Your sustained mileage was only 40/week with the peak of 58, with the longest run of 13, and only a few of 10 mile runs. Your average daily run was about 6 miles, and there were a lot of skipped days. Ideally, you would want about 55-60/week sustained, with the longest run of about 18-20, and/or a lot of 10-12 mile planned and timed tempo runs.

You have been getting sick a lot. If it happens once, you can call it an accident, but if it happens frequently, it is a good idea to examine the patterns. How is your diet? Do you get enough sleep? Maybe too much stress?

Also, you have probably over-tapered with very little running prior to the race. You still want to keep your regular routine, only cut in half or so the length of your runs in the last week prior to the race. Some people need a little more, others a little less. To get the exact number, you'd have to experiment. However, three days a week with short runs for two weeks is very likely an overtaper.

From d-enz on Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 15:59:54

Good Job Bill!

Glad to see you made it back to St. George. Like you wrote I think Boston was a great experience and we all probably learned a thing or two from running it. I'm sure as we continue training and do more marathons and more consistent training our times will continue to improve. I think the one thing I learned was maybe the side effects of being over hydrated at sea level, plus it was a little difficult not being familiar with the course. I didn't feel like the hills were that hard I just had spent too much energy in the beginning trying to get back onto pace, then when the hills arrived I was kind of like you, slowed down quite a bit. But, hey like you said it was a learning experience and who knows maybe in a few years we can go back out again and try to improve on our times. On the way home my wife said we should look into doing the Walt Disney World Marathon sometime, she thinks that would be a fun trip, especially for the kids. I don't know where she thinks we'll get the money or the time off from work. How are your legs feelings? I am starting to feel a little better and might even go out tonight for a run. Is anybody planning on getting together Saturday morning to run?

From SuperFly on Fri, Apr 21, 2006 at 10:29:14

Good job to both of you, Dustin and Bill. I think we all learned a lot from this race. Just being able to see the course one time would really help me if I did it again. Its good to here that Dustin is feeling better. I want to go for a run this afternoon and also hook up Saturday moring for a short little run. I hope you guys are ready to step up our training and have a good summer of speed. I honestly think that if we put in a solid summer from here to Oct that we can run a amazing St. George Marathon where we all PR and do it in style. It was really nice running with you guy. I think that due to the thousands of people we did a good job hanging together. I feel bad that Dustin had to "go" or other wise I think he would have been right there with me at the end.

PS. Those hills are weak. There is way to much press about heartbreak hill.

Two a days are actually easier on your body if you keep them low-mileage. That is, do your weekly mileage goal in two workouts a day instead of one. If you have the time do it - start with something like 3 in the morning and 5 at night, and build it up.

From Steve Hooper on Tue, Apr 25, 2006 at 11:15:51

Hey Bill, I got your email and thought I would just answer your questions here.

I think if you're having issues with your hips and feet after your runs you need to spend extra time stretching, icing, and messaging that area. Don't keep pushing through, or you're going to end-up in a situation similar to mine. Also, because you have had Plantar Fasciitis in the past I would be cautious with your feet being sore.

I agree with what Sasha said above about running two a days. You can still keep your miles low and allow your body some rest time and get the miles in you feel you need. Just don't push too much until your aches and pains from Boston are cleared-up.

See you tonight.

Hi Bill,

Although I'm not a caffiene fiend, I enjoy my cup of coffee in the morning and generally down a Coke in the afternoon. Yes, caffiene will affect your performance, at least it does mine. I usually intentionally down a flat coke or Mt. Dew at about mile 20 of a marathon for that extra shot of sugar and caffiene. Of course for us ultrarunners, caffiene is our best friend at 2am in a 100 mile race;-)

From SuperFly on Wed, May 03, 2006 at 08:08:01

Bill during my whole running career-high school, college, and now I've always felt like pop should be a serious no no. When I'm drinking pop I feel way more sluggish than without. My personal performance goes way up when I'm not drinking soda. Its also said that carbination puts on fat. I think the fact is that if you just drink one pop a day for a year it will put on 10lbs.

So as you can tell I would say never, ever on the soda pop. Although if I wasn't trying to run marathons I'd be downing a Dr. Pepper right now.

Bill - get a watch. That is one workout when you really need it. It would tell a lot to know how fast you were doing those 200s, and this will also tell you if you need to do them at all (I have a feeling you don't, based on your past training, but without numbers it is very easy to be wrong). I wear a $6.43 watch I got at Walmart. It does not have to be expensive to do the job.

Also, it appears you forgot to update your mileage for this day.

Rubbing the foot over a golf on the floor helps a little. It's also something you can do while in the office.

Bill

Hope things check out ok with the doctor and you can get healed up quickly. I've been experiencing some sharp pain in my upper groin area ever since the run on Saturday, had a similar problem a few years ago toward the end of my college running career. Do you think you are going to be able to run tomorrow night? Do you know if Steve is going to be there? I think Clyde is going out of town.

I went and visited the doctor regarding my foot. As I arrived the receptionist simply said might I have your insurance card and fill out this book. No hello! What do you want? After all the paper work the nurse escorted me back to the room. Took the usual vitals and left me stranded in the office looking at the walls. A few minutes later the X ray tech came in. she escorted me and took X rays. After she was done, I asked her why I did not need to ware one of those heavy jackets. Her reply was oops! Now back at the room looking at the walls, the doctor comes in, and tells me it looks like a stress fracture of the middle Meta carpel. And that I would have to ware this boot cast for 5 weeks. I gasped and said in denial, can I run in that? He paused and smiled, then replied, sure. My daughter and your money will be going to BYU in the fall.

Hey Bill,

Hope the foot is getting better. Have you considered doing any workouts in a swimming pool? I know with some of the injuries I have had over the years, I have enjoyed doing pool workouts and have been able to maintain my fitness level to a degree, of course nothing is going to feel the same to you as running, but hang in there.

From SuperFly on Tue, May 16, 2006 at 14:03:02

Bill sorry to hear about your injury. I hope you can heal up quick. I missed running with you guys. I saw tones of babes running in central park. There are hundreds of people running in there every day. I've never seen so many runners just out doing their own thing. At any given time a day I'm sure there are over 400 runners jogging in the park.

From Steve Hooper on Wed, May 24, 2006 at 08:19:30

Good to hear you're breaking a sweat. You must be working out harder than before your injury. :-)

How does the foot feel on the stair climber? Do you feel any pain when you put pressure on it as you're climbing?

Keep up the cross training!

I bought a stationary bike from D.I. on Monday and it's been nice to get the heart rate up as well. I also have an appt. with the Sports Med Doc. at 2:30 today. So I'm hoping to get some kind of feed-back from him.

Today Clyde and I went up to Steve’s home. We met Dustin at Steves place. On the way up Clyde and I were amazed at how many people were running the marathon course. We must have seen around thirty men, woman and children all dodging speeding cars. When we got to Steves place he had an adventure all mapped out. A rumble in the jungle! A dog eat dog path. As we were running, I could almost hear the faint sound of banjos echoing through the distant canyons. Childhood songs of “over the river and through the woods to grandmother house we go” came to mind. All was well until mile ten and Clyde put on the after burners. In the end Steve cooked up a great breakfast. I felt relieved that I was able to run that far. I met my goal of 42 miles this week. iam shooting for 50 next week. will try and do two a days at least twice next week.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the compliment. I'd love to be able to run a 2:45 marathon, but I don't think that will ever happen.

As far as training for an ultra, the main thing I think is time on your feet. Not necessarily miles, although that certainly does help. I generally follow a modified Hal Higdon format in that I go for my long run (20-35 miles) on Sunday's, 1 day for speed, 1 day for tempo and 1 day midweek for a longish run. I usually take Saturday's off. I'm currently training for a 100k next month in Oregon and also for the Wasatch Front 100 mile in Sept. so I'm trying to ramp the miles up. I'm lucky in that I can run to work and back, roughly 17.7 miles round trip. This helps get the miles up quickly. That's the physical part, the mental part is to lose brain cells in large amounts and become mental;-) It's mainly realizing that you're going to be in a race for hours and hours, possibly days. The race becomes your universe and nothing else matters. There's also the huge sense of accompliment when you finish something like a 100 mile run knowing that very few people will ever be able, or want, to do something like that.

I started out around 8:30. all decked out and no one to run with. so I took the lonley trail by the virgin river and ended up running some of the painters half marathon route. My lower abs are very sore. takes me almost a mile of running to losen up. I could also tell that i had not ate properly because my energy level was way down. I need come to reality and realize that not eating right affects my training and performance.

July 24th started out being a fine day. Went running with Steve and Clyde and Dustin up near Steve’s place. Steve had this 17-mile trail all mapped out. our adventure began at the base of a mountain in pine valley. We were all decked out with camel packs and power bars. The trail looked simple on paper, I thought Steve must have got the map from Daniel Boons training guide for marathoners. About ten yards into the trail we ran into one-way Willy and his dog Ralph. Willy was all packed for a three-day hike on the same trail we were about to tackle in a couple of hours. The trail was steep and full of deadly ankle breaking rocks. A challenge that even mighty Brigham Young may of declined. The views of the valley floor were spectacular. About 6 miles into our 17 mile tour we decided as a group we better turn back because the trail did not appear to be getting much better. So we took our rag tagged war torn legs back down the trail. I gave my usual donation of blood sweat and tears to this happy trail falling down a record 5 times. We met up with one-way Willy who briefly told us that if we would of kept going the trail would of gotten even worse. At the end of the run we were able to get into a nice cold creek. or "Crick" if your from Pine valley.

I went out last night with the club fully expecting to have a good work out. It was hot and humid. Around mile 5 my body decided to go south. Unfortunately Steve and Clyde wanted to go north. I felt it was heat exhaustion. Steve suggested t was probably all the miles I did the day before catching up to me. Steve held back and towed me back to the park.

Took off with Clyde. we only did 15 but it felt like 26. We did not run fast. kept a pretty slow pace. I am glad this week is over. Clyde is amazing runner. He is getting better all the time. I think he could run a 2:30 this year in STG marathon. looking forward to a day off. Clyde gave me some sort of drink at the end of the run. I think it helped me recover some. I hope they don't test me monday for Roids:):) I viewed my miles this week 69.25 and got a little disapointed. decided to correct the problem and run another 2 tonight. now i feel better. ahh

Way to go with your work-outs for the week. I think if we're able to keep this up we're going to end up doing pretty decent at St. George.

You're the man already getting in a lot of miles for the week and last week was pretty impressive too. I don't think I will be able to go up and do the Hobblecreek Half, we have a high school meet that day. I am thinking about doing the Provo Canyon Half next Saturday. Colorado was nice but hard to do long runs alone.

only did 3 this morning. Thursday night is club night here in St.George. Met up with Clyde at the park. As I approached he looked like a young Sigmund Freud with his goatee. I think he asked me how my mother was doing. Steve came a few minutes later. And I guess Dustin had a day up at Zion Park running through the narrows dodging flash floods all day. Steve, Clyde and my self pushed forward into the night for a 9-mile tour. Steve and Clyde were rambling about their favorite barney show while I was gasping for air and wondering where I could find an oxygen machine. I feel like I run like a rental truck. The kind that has the sticker on the dashboard stating not to exceed 45 mph. I am getting worried about Steve. Every time we run, he is getting some strange cat calls from non female fans in trucks. We may have to start calling him “pretty boy Steve.” I finally caught back up with them around mile 8. Glided our way back to the park.

I went to the gym at 4:30 and decided to do a few miles on the treadmill. As I began, I noticed some sweet old lady next to me running at a nice 8 min mile pace. I smiled as I cranked it up to 9 mph. She bellowed out like a dragon on roids “hey sunny lets get it on.” I glanced over with utter shock. Then I said “ bring it” she cranked it up to 9.5 mph, and I cranked it up to 10 mph. She looked like she was going to loose her dentures. I briefly held on to the side rails and she screamed, “that’s cheating sunny.” She cranked it up another notch to 10.5. I am use to being last on the club but there is no way in heck I am going to let this lady on the other side of 50 show me up. I cranked it up to 11. I thought there is no way she can maintain this pace for long. To my surprise she kept it up for almost a mile. After my victory lap on the treadmill. She left with a smile and I left with the feeling that father time is trying to catch me. I got up this morning looked in the mirror and saw my buzzed head. I got this army hair cut saturday. I am hoping it will help me take 30 seconds off my mile. Calf still a little sore. it does feel better then saturday. ran 11 tonight.

Or if I worked at the hospital I would say, “ you can’t get blood out of a turnip.” Or if I was a geography teacher I would say don’t buy beachfront property in Montana. Hope the ankle gets better, heck of a job last week hitting that high mileage probably time to start tapering off a little. I'm pretty concerned right now about my blisters, no running for me for the next little while. I just ordered the Nike Zoom Miler, so I will show it to you when it comes in. When I was trying to order the shoes online yesterday everywhere I checked said they were out of stock, so I was then going to order the Asics Speedstars? I think the same ones you and Clyde have, anyway when I logged onto Eastbay today I was able to order the Nike's so we'll see if they come in or not. At this point it wouldn't matter what kind of shoes I had on, my feet aren't even up to walking.

Bill,

What time are you guys going to run tonight? I am going to try to run a few miles after school and see how the feet hold up, that will probably determine if I can run much later tonight.

From Superfly on Thu, Sep 14, 2006 at 11:00:12

Way to go on the miles Bill.

I was going to tell you yeasterday that the best day to day shoe you can buy, and put a lot of miles on is the asic Landreths. That may not be spelled right but these are really good training shoes if your pretty neutral in you running stride. I'd go with these over anything else.

Good Run last night, thanks for hanging back with me, just couldn't get the legs and body moving, but I was glad I could get out and give it a try, a few more days and miles and I should be back to normal.

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, Sep 15, 2006 at 14:23:16

Good mileage this week, but I am concerned you might be overdoing it packing 14-15 mile days back to back without proper preparation earlier. You should probably ease off a bit - an occasional 14 mile day should be followed by a couple of 8 mile days.

I got my shoes last Friday and tried them out on my Saturday run, felt good and I am pretty sure I'm going to wear them in the marathon. Are you doing the Swiss Days? I'm thinking about it, but would also like to do some miles after the race, would you be interested? I would like to run somewhere on the marathon course, let me know what you are planning this week. I won't be there Thursday night we have a cross country meet up in Enterprise.

Ran with a few friends and the company of 4,600 runners. People were screaming at me and trying to make me drink out of some cups. Occasionally I ran into some person who had a stick of Vaseline. I wonder what they wanted me to do with that? The first few miles were interesting. Someone biffed it right next to me and got trampled. Around mile 4 I ran over several road kills. Spots of blood and bone. I thought to my self. "Poor Clyde and Dustin, may they rest in piece." I was moving nice and felt good until Veyo hill. Then my right calf told me that I was a pain to carry, and it wanted to quit. The moon looked cool. Big and bright. I did not get my goal time, But there will be other marathons. I had a good time. Enjoyed the humor of your post Bill. Sorry the calf injury was still bothering you Saturday, but like you said there will be other marathons. Just ease back into things and be cautious of causing any of further injuries. I'm thinking as part of my training through the winter I might start lifting a little and doing some more things to get stronger, especially through my core area.

So Bill, what are you and I going to do to redeem our souls from post 3 hour hell? We are so freakin close it's driving me crazy!

I hope your calves are doing better.

From Dave Holt on Wed, Oct 11, 2006 at 11:05:24

Bill, I've had a few of those types of races myself. Great attitude to come out of it. Isn't it all about TRYING to have some fun?!

From Superfly on Wed, Oct 11, 2006 at 11:28:53

I think the Wild Bull should drink Red Bull on race day. It gives you wings!

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Oct 11, 2006 at 22:16:34

Bill - you've put in some good training in the last two months. Unfortunately, you have not yet had the time to let it sink in. It takes a while. Run easy for a couple of weeks, then continue your regular training routine and run the Valley of Fire. You should do quite a bit better. And since your calves have been giving you problems in the past, stretch and massage them regularly as a prevention measure.

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Oct 11, 2006 at 22:25:51

One more thought - I entered your Hobblecreek in the predictor and it produced almost exactly the time you ran in St. George. Granted that both races were apparently hampered by non-endurance issues, so we should take the numbers with a grain of salt, still it would make sense to say that what holds your marathon back is your anaerobic threshhold speed (roughly, the fastest pace you can hold for an hour).

To fix - measure out a 3 mile stretch of road, flat or slightly downhill, and run it twice a week at 6:15 pace (flat) or faster if downhill. Maybe bring Clyde along, as well as other members of the club - two setting the pace upfront, and two swinging whips behind in case you start falling back.

When you get used to this, do that stretch twice in one workout. Make sure it is always the same stretch so you can monitor your progress.

Clyde would say “get a gun” I am still feeling sore. abs and feet, calf tight but getting better. I think my flexibility is getting better. I ran from main street and ran up the the Running center. felt a little sore at first. Calf. Ran up red cliff and up the switchback trail then back down to the recreation center to my Pilates class. I think this class is helping with my flexibility. I took some emer-gen-c last night to see if it helped me in recovery. I do not seem as sore today.

I dashed out of work at 4 pm to go running with the club. Dave, Dustin, Steve all showed up ready to rumble. Clyde is coaching his wrestling team. We blasted off and headed up Diagonal street, down sunset then down behind the black mountain. The pace got faster about 3 miles into it and my hip flexors (back) were screaming for me to stop. ) Steve had me try a stretch. It helped a little. I had to stop twice and stretch. Dave was pushing the pace and Steve shot out with him. Dustin Did a U turn and towed me back to the park. When I got back to work I noticed I had a flat. My left Nike air zoom had lost its air. Not a good sign.

That night I had a dream. I was talking to Dave and I asked him what was the secret of running fast. He held out his hand and said “grasshopper take the pebble from my hand. And just as I was about to grab the pebble, he sprinted away.

I had a rendezvous with the road, just me, my blue tights and the dark night air. I Took it fairly easy most of the way. I tried to stretch my hip flexors by doing some cross over stuff Steve showed me. Calves were sore after the run.

After looking at Steve’s monster day, I felt I had to man up and get a few miles myself. I ran out the door and ran directly to the recreation center and hit the treadmill. My Left calf started to hurt the last quarter mile. Average pace 6:50 with warm. 1 % incline.

ran with the double D's and Steve. We Ran the painters course. We took one wrong turn and ended up only going 12.5. I ran out of gas around mile 9 when Steve and Dave picked up the pace. I think I have some work to do with my endurance. Good work out. will try for 60 next week.

Your going to hit your goal of 60 this week. But be smart about it. Pain=No Gain.

I won't be able to make it to club tonight, and I chatted with Dustin last night at Lowe's and he has a game and won't be able to make it either.

Then I will be gone until Tuesday.

Ran up telegragh road and over the freeway and into the desert reserve. I am going to the BYU game tonight so I will not run with the guys tonight. Legs felt real sore most of the way. I picked up the pace the last two miles and it seemed I was feeling a little better. When I got home I walked by the mirror and said "Mirror, Mirror on the wall who is the fastest runner in the Land!" Could it Be Dave, Dustin, or Steve, or even Clyde. To my surprise the mirror replied. "A wise old owl sat in an oak, The more he heard, the less he spoke; The less he spoke, the more he heard; Why aren't we all like that wise old bird?

Ran with Steve from his store. Ran some trails and road. For some reason I slow down on the trails. I have been a real baby on the trails. Steve still is fast even when he is sick.

Due to the Holiday season I think I should change my fast running blog to fast running Blob. I am afraid to get on the scales. This morning I woke up and ran down river road. Discovered a wallet with some bank cards and Drivers License on the the bridge. "I said to my self Merry Christmas!" After I had Lunch and went to Vegas I decided to find the persons number and thank her for a wonderful day. Alright, I could not live with my self if I did such a thing. I called her and had her pick it up at mt work. I must of looked kind of suspicious running around town with some womans wallet. The run went ok. Nothing special.
